A Landscape Painting Comes to Life in the Heart of the City

Chaoyang Park Plaza is set on the edge of Beijing’s largest public park, and has been envisioned as an extension of the green space. The scheme expresses the “Shanshui City” philosophy, derived from the East Asian perception of a world imbued with an affinity for nature. The design translates natural elements found in classical Shanshui landscape painting into a large sculptural art form that evokes a spiritual resemblance to nature on a city scale.

The towers’ façades are composed of single-curved, cold-bent, dark, reflective glass that gives the feeling that the architectural complex is naturally growing out of the ground rather than “built,” while evoking the aesthetic resonance of a Chinese ink painting. The exterior vertical fins emphasize the smoothness and verticality of the towers, while functioning as an energy-efficient ventilation system, drawing fresh air indoors. Thus, the idea of “nature” is not only embodied in the design itself, but in the innovation and integration of green technology as well.
